Abstract:

The growing demand for global energy, particularly from offshore oil & gas and renewable sectors, continues to drive innovation in offshore engineering. Professor Choo Yoo Sang has been at the forefront of this development since the 1980s, bridging the gap between research and engineering practice. His research team has advanced the understanding of the complex responses of lift systems, rigging arrangements, and lift components, culminating in the development of H-LIFT, a knowledge-based engineering design assistant for heavy-lift installation. This tool has supported both academic inquiry and practical offshore projects, enabling safer and more efficient construction. Drawing on lessons learnt from diverse construction techniques and applications of H-LIFT, this lecture will highlight the critical role of equipment and methodology in achieving successful offshore installations. The lecture will conclude with perspectives on recent innovations and future directions.
