2025 MEL Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program in Marine Environmental Science

The 2025 MEL Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program in Marine Environmental Science (URF) aims to encourage undergraduate students to pursue careers in science and technology by providing research opportunities at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (MEL), Xiamen University.


I. Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled as full-time undergraduate students during the period of their URF projects and should be interested in pursuing a career in marine environmental science, technology, economy and management.


II. Application Procedure

Applicants can choose a research project from the list attached to this announcement. Applications outside the list will not be accepted this year. Applications are due by May 6, 2025. The URF Committee will organize the review process and notify all the applicants of their decision in the late May or early June.

Required Documents:

1. Contact information of one or two referees;

2. A scanned copy of transcript with grade point average (GPA)/ranking and the official seal/signature of the Dean's office from your home institution;

3. A scanned copy of any other supporting documents, such as awards and honors, published papers, and proficiency in English (if applicable);

4. Proof of accident insurance. (If not available, MEL will purchase insurance for fellows before the start of the project);

Note: Please make sure to upload Item # 2-4 as a single PDF file with a maximum size of 20 M. Please have a double check if you successfully submit the materials.


III. Benefits

•Stipend

MEL will provide fellows with a monthly stipend of up to 1700 RMB  (pre-tax, full attendance) during the implementation of the project (1 to 3 months).


•Travel & Housing

MEL will cover the round-trip travel expenses of fellows. According to the financial regulations of XMU, economy class flight tickets are acceptable for students studying abroad and in Taiwan, China (up to $1000 USD for students studying in Asia/Africa/Oceania, up to $2000 USD for students studying in other continents). For train, high-speed rail  and bus travel in China, only second-class seats are permitted.

Students enrolled in universities in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao, China are restricted to traveling by train (second-class seats), high-speed rail (second-class seats), or bus. If air travel is required, the one-way fare must not exceed the price of a second-class train or high-speed rail ticket for the same itinerary.

On-campus accommodation will be provided and accommodation fees will be covered. The on-campus dormitory is expected to open after July 5, with specific arrangements to be announced separately. Students arriving prior to this date will need to make their own accommodation arrangements or coordinate with their instructors. We appreciate your understanding.


IV. Program Implementation Schedule

· Once admitted, students must contact their instructors to discuss and prepare for the project.

· Fellows need to complete their research projects at MEL within 1-2 months.

· Fellows are required to attend security trainings organized by the Centre of Major Equipment and Technology (COMET) and equipment trainings of their research group.

· In addition to their research, fellows are welcome to take full advantage of the facilities, seminars and field trips offered by MEL (which will be organized between mid or late July).

· Fellows from Xiamen University are required to help coordinate academic and social activities and provide assistance for fellows from other institutions.


V. Program Finale

· Fellows must give an oral presentation in their research group by end of their projects and submit a poster to URF within 1 week after the project ends.

· Any related project outcomes or publications must acknowledge the support provided by the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Science (Xiamen University) Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

· The Fellowship Committee will evaluate all fellows' performance, issue certificates to those who have completed their projects, and select Outstanding Fellows.
