Junior Blue Pioneer Program

Youth leaders are making waves in caring and protecting our ocean !

Here in China...

Junior Blue Pioneers Program, led by a group of marine scientists from the State Key Laboratory of Marine Environmental Sciences at Xiamen University (XMU), aims at involving senior school students in marine science research and nurturing these young pioneers in shaping a sustainable ocean. Initiated by Tencent Education Foundation, Paradise Environmental Protection Foundation, this program has run 3 sessions since 2022, and has attracted 60 Chinese youth from across the nation and the world.

Now the program is looking forward to helping connect and unite youth locally, nationally, and globally to create even more synergies for the seas! We believe that

Mobilizing the collective power of global youth is essential in achieving a sustainable future !

IN July, we will invite international students to a scientific trip that dives deep into coastal area development in China. It is an opportunity for you to not only immerse in Chinese costal life with Chinese local students, but also to contribute your perspectives on marine sustainability in China, New Zealand and the world as well.

So if you are…

● A high school student aged 15-18

● Passionate about marine science and sustainability

● Curious about the aquaculture and the ecology of Chinese fishing village

● Excited to cruise the waters in mangrove conservation and coral conservation

● Interested in visiting aquaculture farms, seafood factories

● Eager to conducting marine science research under the guidance of seasoned scientists

● Willing to talk with experts, fficials and students on sustainability

● Enthusiastic about exploring scientific solution to fishing villages when local communities are facing social, economic, and ecological trade-offs

● Looking for innovation, problem solving, and making a difference to marine conservation

Junior Blue Pioneers Training Program (JBPTP)

Training Schedule:

1. Virtual Classes and Meetings ( Early July)

Virtual classes for introduction of marine science basics and some cutting - edge topics in sustainable development

2. 5-Day Field - Based Science and Technology Innovation Training

( Mid-July, Zhangzhou Dongshan Island)

Training Contents:

Session 1: Field trips to Coral reefs, mangroves and inter-tidal zone ecosystems and nearby farms and factories

Session 2: Laboratory hands-on operations on the detection

Session 3: Completion of a team-work research report on sustainable development based on above research.

Duration: 1 Week Overnight Research

Time: 5 day/4 night somewhere between July 11& July 20

Location: Dongshan Swire Marine Station of Xiamen University（D-Smart）,

Dongshan,Fujian, PRC

Cost: FREE. Sponsorship will cover the costs of courses, accommodation, meals and research - related expenses during the programme.Any other meals or accommodation required are at the expense of the attendee. Attendees are responsible for travel to and from D-Smart.

3. Long-Term Tracking and Cultivation Training Model

Outstanding achievements will be recommended to XMU 70.8 media lab

Constant mentor support would be given to Junior Blue Pioneers alumni
